Urthen 2017

October 2016 marked my four year anniversary of meeting Thomas and Amara Alban of MazAmar Art Pottery. While taking a break from my 3 month apprenticeship at Cal-Earth Institute in 2012, I was visiting the area for the weekend to attend a show at Pappy and Harriet's and seredipitously discovered a pottery shop on Mane Street! I walked in amazed and in awe of the beautiful and sacred space they had created. They had mentioned they needed a new production potter, and I jumped at the chance to be a part of a business solely focused on ceramics, what I got my BFA in during college! I couldn't ignore this synchronicity and soon enough I found myself moving permanently to the Mojave desert with a new job and a UHaul filled with everything I owned.

Amara and Thomas have been amazing teachers, mentors, bosses, and most of all, friends. I could not have asked for a better job that challenged me and am so grateful for how they encouraged me to produce my own work. Without this opportunity, I don't think Urthen would have come to fruition the way it did! Come 2017 I will no longer be working for them as my time has come to move forward in my own business. Four years later I am again closing one chapter and opening another. I will be leaving the desert for a bit to do some soul searching and travel. I will thus be taking a break from producing pottery until late spring while I rekindle my inspiration to inform new sculptures, ceramics, and earthworks.

This is a hard change for me, but know that this journey is an answer to my heart's calling. Creating art and beauty is something I will always continue to do for the rest of my life. By taking time to nurture my soul and individual self, I can then better serve the collective.

I look forward to tending to my inner landscape by taking part in a 6-week Wilderness Immersion with The Winter Moon Initiative February-March 2017 and tending to the outer landscape after by deepening my earth building work and help develop a Ceramic Architecture program at Cal-Earth in August 2017. I am relocating my home and ceramics studio to LANDERS, CA so I can get back to creating my Urthen pottery line come April 2017.  I am also looking at apply to ceramic studio residencies, work-trade experiences, and earthwork opportunities in the future as well. All of these things fuel the work I want to be putting out into the world. I am open to any suggestions or recommendations you have to share! My goal is to awaken to my deeper purpose as an artist during this turning point in our existence on this planet and to consciously create where it is needed.
